Starting in Trays

In most parts of Australia—especially where summers come on quickly or you’re aiming for earlier blooms—starting snapdragons in trays is your best bet.

Snapdragon seeds are tiny, so they need a gentle touch. Sow on the surface of seed-raising mix (don’t bury them—light helps germination), then mist gently and cover with a humidity dome or plastic wrap. A bright, warm spot (18–22°C) is perfect. Germination usually takes 10–14 days.

Because seedlings are slow-growing at first, starting indoors or under cover from late summer through early autumn (February to April) will give you good-sized transplants by the time they’re ready to go into the garden in mid to late autumn.

Direct Sowing

Snapdragons can be direct sown, but they’re a little fussy about it. If your garden has mild, moist autumns and you’re not battling weeds or snails, try sprinkling seeds in a well-prepared bed in early autumn. Lightly press them into the soil surface. Water gently with a mist or fine spray.
