The Sweet Sakata Melon is an exquisite Asian variety admired by melon enthusiasts. This small melon typically measures between 7-10 cm, about the size of a large grapefruit.
With its unique grey-green skin that transforms into a beautiful yellow-green when ripe, the Sweet Sakata Melon is not only visually appealing but also boasts a delectable taste.
Each bite reveals a crisp, crunchy texture and an incredibly sweet flavour, reminiscent of a honeydew melon.
With a high sugar content, the light green flesh is juicy and aromatic, providing a refreshing experience that feels as delightful as biting into a perfectly ripe apple, even the thin outer skin and seeds are edible.
It can be used raw in fruit salads or as a snack, or be blended into smoothies or chilled soups.
When harvested slightly under-ripe, it can be pickled to create a unique sweet and sour flavour, making it an excellent complement to Asian-inspired dishes like chicken curry.
Unlike most melons, where the stem naturally detaches when ripe, Sweet Sakata needs to be cut from the plant as soon as the leaves start to fade.
