Description
Wild Rosemary is an extremely hardy native shrub found in coastal areas, hence its other moniker, the Coastal Daisy Bush. This species can be found in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. With its silvery-green foliage, delicate creamy-yellow blooms, and resilience to harsh coastal conditions, this plant is a standout choice for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance yet visually striking addition to their landscapes.
It is a plant built for Australia’s challenging environments. Thriving in sandy, saline soils and enduring coastal winds, drought, and poor nutrients, it’s a natural fit for erosion control, windbreaks, or coastal gardens. An additional bonus is its insect repelling properties.
The true charm of Wild Rosemary lies in its edible foliage, which offers a warm, grassy aroma reminiscent of its Mediterranean namesake. The slender, silvery leaves can be harvested fresh or dried, adding a distinctly Australian twist to both sweet and savoury dishes. Imagine infusing roasted meats with its earthy notes, sprinkling dried leaves into bread dough, or garnishing desserts with its delicate sprigs. The plant’s small, creamy-yellow flowers—blooming from late summer through autumn—are equally versatile, serving as edible decorations for salads, cakes, or cocktails.
Its dense, silvery foliage forms a compact shrub up to 2–3 metres tall, offering year-round structure and contrast in mixed plantings. Beyond practicality, it’s a wildlife magnet, attracting bees and beneficial insects, while its evergreen leaves ensure visual interest even in the harshest seasons.
Seed Propagation
Timing:
- Sow seeds in spring or autumn to avoid extreme temperatures, ensuring optimal germination conditions.
Sowing Method:
- Use shallow containers filled with porous seed raising mix (sandy or loamy).
- Surface sow seeds, cover with a fine layer of mi.
- Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging.
- Place in a warm, shaded/semi shaded location with temperatures 15–20°C .
Germination:
- Expect sprouting in 14–42 days.
- Transplant seedlings once they develop 2–3 true leaves .
Planting Conditions
Location:
- Full sun is critical for vibrant foliage and prolific flowering.
- Ideal for coastal gardens, dunes, or sandy/well drained soils.
Soil Requirements:
- Prefers sandy or sandy loam soils with good drainage.
- Amend heavy soils with sand or organic matter.
- Tolerates a wide pH range (acidic, neutral, alkaline).
Spacing:
- Space plants 1–2m apart for hedging or screening purposes.
Care and Maintenance
Watering:
- Establishment phase: Water deeply 1–2 times weekly.
Mature plants:
- Drought tolerant—supplemental watering only during prolonged dry spells.
Fertilising:
Apply low phosphorus native plant fertilizer in spring and autumn. Avoid over fertilising.
Pruning:
- Prune lightly after flowering (autumn/winter) to maintain shape and encourage bushiness.
- Suitable for formal hedges.
Pest/Disease Management:
- Highly resilient.
- Avoid waterlogged soils to prevent root rot.
Special Notes:
- Fire retardant and salt tolerant, making it ideal for coastal and fire prone areas.
- Foliage is mildly toxic to pets if ingested in large quantities.
Companion Planting Guide
Beneficial Companions:
- Marigolds: Deter nematodes and aphids.
- Westringia (Coastal Rosemary): Shares similar sun and soil needs; enhances coastal aesthetics.
- Pigface (Carpobrotus): Groundcover for erosion control; thrives in sandy soils.
- Lomandra: Grasslike natives for texture contrast and soil stabilization.
- Banksia spp.: Attracts pollinators; complements coastal resilience.
Avoid Planting With:
- Water loving plants (e.g., ferns, hydrangeas) – prefers dry conditions.
- Fennel: Releases growth inhibiting chemicals.
- Beans/Onions: Allelopathic interactions may stunt growth.
Edible Garden Pairings:
- Use alongside bush tucker plants like lemon myrtle or native mint for a functional, aromatic garden.
Harvesting and Uses
