Cress Upland has the same pungent nip that Watercress does and all the same health benefits but is much easier to grow and deserves to be far more widely grown.

It doesn’t require the constant flow of water and can be grown directly in the garden almost all year round. You can also grow it in tubs or boxes. Best of all, it can last as long as two years, giving you piquant leaves all the way through its life cycle.

The plants of land cress are compact and form a rosette of leaves. They are at their best when about 10cm (4in) wide, when the leaves are dark green and succulent.

This ancient food plant has recently been rediscovered by gourmets and is starting to make its appearance in high-end fresh produce stores. Perfect for salads and sandwiches and can also be grown as a sprout or microgreen.

It is also dead end trap for White Cabbage Moths who can’t resist laying their eggs on the leaves. When the eggs hatch, the caterpillars eat the cress leaves and are killed straight away, long before they have a chance to munch on your crops!
