Celery Tall Utah is one of the most popular and dependable disease resistant varieties available. The plants have a compact habit with tightly folded hearts, and stringless stalks. It is a celery that is grown by home gardeners as well as professional growers. It is noted for its crispy stalks that can grow to 70 cm long!
Excellent for salads and celery sticks, or just simply enjoyed raw right out of the garden. No blanching is needed and it is simple to grow, and stringless. It will tolerate some shade, but prefers full sun exposure.
Celery seeds are small and tricky to plant. Sow celery seeds in individual pots or containers, putting as few as possible into each pot. One trick you can use is to mix the celery seeds with sand and then sprinkle the sand/seed mixture over the pots. Cover lightly with soil, as celery seeds like to be planted shallowly.
The roots of celery plants are limited, usually stretching just 20 cm away from the plant and only 10 cm deep, so the top part of the soil not only has to have enough moisture, it must also contain all the nutrients the plants need. Celery likes soil that is capable of retaining moisture and so soils that have had organic compost or manure are well suited, otherwise dig in organic compost or manure fertiliser into the soil a few weeks before planting out the celery seedlings. If your soil is well drained ensure that the celery receives adequate regular watering in warm periods.
