This amazing Mexican fruit is encased in its own papery husk. Tomatillo Verde Puebla is a hardy and interesting plant that needs minimal attention and grows exceptionally well in cool climates. Plants grow to 2m and have many branches laden with heavy fruit. You will need to have two or more plants for cross-pollination, isolated tomatillo plants rarely set fruit.
Also known as a ‘husk tomato’ bush it produces round golden green fruit with a tart flavour. They can be used raw or cooked and go fabulously in salsas, sauces, jams and preserves. The unripe fruit is also used extensively in curries, soups and stews.
Like their close relatives, cape gooseberries, tomatillos have a high pectin content. Pick when still green in colour, once they start to turn yellow and fall from the plant they are often over-ripe.
Ripe tomatillos keep refrigerated for about two weeks. They keep even longer with the husks removed and the fruit refrigerated in sealed plastic bags.
