Beetroot Detroit is a very popular and versatile beet that is rich in color and texture. This is a fast growing, round shaped variety is great for all purpose use and remains a firm favourite with today’s commercial growers and home gardeners alike.
They grow for most of the year and are great for salads and dinners. The foliage is also highly regarded for taste and is high in iron so you can double your pleasure by enjoying both the roots and the greens.
A high yielding variety that is suited to both early and main crops and on the plus side, they are resistant to downy mildew. They do well in all kinds of soils and can be grown in containers.
They prefer full sun and good drainage, but in most climates can also tolerate partially filtered shade. They can be planted in early spring or late summer.
The young luxuriant red-veined leaves can be eaten like spinach and the dark red, delicious tasting roots are ideal for baking, pickling, or grating raw into salads.
Alternate roots can be thinned for use as baby beet and the rest allowed to grow on to maturity.
