8 Reasons to Love a flower Garden

1. An undeniable benefit of flower gardening is that it forces you to get up out of your chair, turn off the TV, and get outside. Gardening is a great means of exercise and aids in improving strength and flexibility due to the digging, bending, lifting, and stretching required.

2. One of the great parts about starting a flower garden is how inexpensive it can be to get going. Gardening is one of those hobbies where you can spend money on fancy equipment and pre-started flowers, but you don’t have to. Look online for second hand bargains, visit the flea markets on the weekend or keep an eye out on verge collections where you can often pick up a wheelbarrow or two.

3. You can save your money by getting a little thrifty. Seeds are much cheaper than seedlings. You will have to work a little harder to get them started but if you are willing to put in the time, you can save money and grow exactly what you want! Watching a seed sprout and turn into an a life structure is an amazing experience.

4. Flower gardening is one hobby that just keeps getting bigger and better every year. Annuals happily self-seed and perennials multiply and giving you twice the number of blooms as last year. You will also be providing a sumptuous feast for the insect world.

5. Don’t pay $15 for a simple bouquet of flowers, when you can grow 1000’s of them for the same price. All those beautiful vases sitting empty in your cabinet will thank you and you will have plenty left over to make up bunches for friends and family. Cutting your blooms is an excellent way to encourage your plants to grow more flowers.

6. A well-manicured flower garden is a wonderful way to beautify your home and create a warmer, more welcoming vibe. Your exterior design can add dollars to your home’s value as well as improving the view for all your neighbours. I love walking my dog through the suburbs enjoying a peek into other peoples gardens. It is a good way to know what works well in your area. You do need a dog though, or you look very suspicious 🙂

7. Gardening can actually boost your immunity. By working in and around the soil, you are exposing yourself to common bacteria and microbes. This allows your body to build up its immune system by creating antibodies. So don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty!

8. Finally, gardening can do wonders for your cognitive and emotional health. The beautiful colours and sweet smells of a flower garden can help improve your mood and help you to relax.
